The Power of Pausing

What do the following activities have in common?

  • Taking a shower or bath
  • Going for a walk
  • Going to the loo
  • Sleeping
  • Meditating
  • Making love

Got it yet?

They are all simple activities that entail very little, if any, thinking and require us to take a little time to PAUSE what we’ve been doing, pause from thinking about whatever we were thinking about, pause from whatever we’ve been agonising about.

When we simply PAUSE, our brains somehow go into another gear. Creative insights emerge. And solutions to problems that we thought were intractable can suddenly become clear.

Simple solutions and simple ways of handling life are far more appealing – and effective – for most people than trying to implement complex theories, techniques and strategies.

And for most of us, the simple act of pausing is a lot more attractive a prospect than adding yet more “doing” in a futile attempt to resolve whatever has been challenging us.

“I’ve known Leo since the early 90’s when we were on the same two-year training course. Since then we have shared time together during more training courses (even over to the USA), peer supervision, mutual support, and as good friends. I’ve also attended workshops he has held and his wide range of skills and experience are very evident.

“What is more to the point his workshops are enjoyable and effective because his training has covered such a wide spectrum, and his approach is sensitive, open, and friendly. I’m glad I know him.”
